Taco Bell on Campus!

Holy Shit. My source inside University Unions just confirmed that future dining options at the University is to include a Taco Bell in the League. For years students have complained about the lack of Taco Bell on campus. It even hurt our college rankings. Having a Taco Bell in the league will change campus forever. Talk about a recruiting tool. Hopefully it will be open late night. I pray it's not anything like Wendy's, whose hours are literally 10am-2pm during the summer.

According to a long time university bus driver, there was a Taco bell on campus at one point. I think it was by Rick's. It was removed either because health violations, or because fast food was eliminated from the South U downtown district. In the past there have been MSA candidates who have run on the bring Taco Bell to Campus platform. They were elected and failed to come through. Most recently in 2003 when UMEC almost voted to place a Taco Bell in Pierpont Commons.

If you don't believe me, remember that I did break the Quiznos in Pierpont Story.

Also, Panda Express is replacing Villa Pizza in the Union. There is also talk of Dominoes replacing Magic Wok, but nothing is confirmed.

Brian, there used to be a Taco Bell, McDonalds, and Burger King on campus. That ATT cellular store, I think the JJ's on State used to house them.

Then people got all "Health Conscious" and I think somebody violated some codes, and they were gone.

Also, you could have just texted me the information instead of making me come to your blog.

Having lived in Ann Arbor all my life, I can confirm that yes: In fact, the South/East University block used to be the home of a Taco Bell, a McDonalds and a Burger King.

McDonalds was on the corner of S. University and Forrest (I think it's now a bubble tea). Burger King was next to Panchero's. Taco Bell was on South University where that pasta place is now (across from the Ed building).

In its prime, the taco bell there was one of the finest fast food establishments in the nation. The line would regularly stretch out in the restaurant. It would crank out hundreds of hungry trash mealers during the lunch hour.

Then there was a change in management. Things slowed down. Health code violations began to pile up. It closed. The BK and McD's soon followed--presumably during some health craze during the mid-90s.

So the legend on campus is that the Mickey D's closed down because on Earth Day, some members of Greenpeace made friends with the people in the apartments above the restaurant, opened the windows, and vomited on everyone who walked into the restaurant.

That's one hell of a health code violation.
